Fiber Optic Cable Care - page 1

Fiber Optic Cables
CARE and HANDLING PROCEDURES
Intended use of this product is to illuminate a surgical site by relaying light from a fiber optic light source to
the desired site. Cables are medical grade, high transmittance, and peak efficiency. Cables can be used with
quartz halogen, metal halide, LED, or Xenon light sources. Compatible with virtually all endoscopes, medi-
cal instruments, and microscopes.
Contraindications
To our knowledge, there are no contraindications
for this device.
General Precautions
1. Fiber optic cables are provided non-sterile
and must be sterilized before use. See in-
structions for cleaning and sterilization.
2. Always inspect cables for evidence of dam-
age prior to use. Pay particular attention to
optical surfaces looking for scratches or
dings.
3. Treat the light cable as you would any fine
optical device.
4. When using with a 300 watt Xenon light
source, be sure light source is filtering at
least 90% of infrared radiation (IR) to pre-
vent high heat.
5. The user of this product should b thorough-
ly familiar and trained in the use and care
of this product.
6. FIRE HAZARD: Never drape or cover the end
of any fiberoptic cable with anything flam-
mable or combustible.
7. Do not look directly into the fiberoptic cable
receptacle on the lightsource while the unit
is turned on. When the cable is in the
lightsource, do not look directly into the
instrument end of the fiberoptic cable when
the lightsource is turned on.
Cleaning
Fiberoptic cables for endoscopes, microscopes, and
surgical instruments are high-quality optical devic-
es. They require similar care to that taken for any
precision optical component. After each use, the
light guide should be washed and cleaned of any
debris. A soft brush and mild detergent should be
used to clean the device. Pay particular attention
to any crevices or seams. Avoid any harsh materials
or detergents that can scratch or in any way dam-
age the optical surfaces on each end of the cable.
BR Surgical recommends the following guidelines
contained in ASTM F 1515-00 “

for endoscopes, much of this information will ap-
ply to the light guide.
